FRENCH TOAST

I just made Léon French toast for lunch. I haven't had French toast for years. It got me to thinking. Why is it called French toast? - given very few French people have ever heard of it. They don't even have the right kind of bread there to make it - a baguette isn't exactly ideal! Language is strange.

I think it's the same as we have: franskbrød (frensh bread), wienerbrød (Wianna bread = Danish pastry). Just using other countrys for making things more fancy?

Either that, or nobody wants to take responsibility for certain items of food! ;-) Btw, Phyllis, do you know what the Danish for baguette is?

No, flûte. Sorry, not a case of trying to distance ourselves from it, just a case of using the wrong French word.

And pronouncing it Danish???

In this case, the Danish pronunciation is actually pretty close to French: [fly:t] (the [t] is lenis instead of fortis, but that wouldn't bother most people).

Just like Vienna loves ? No one ever heard of such a thing in Vienna !!

I've never tried to be in love in Vienna. Perhaps it's nice. :-) BTW, what exactly is a Vienna loaf?

The word we used in the 70s for baguette in scotland! Typical of my parents' generation (the same people who used to call pizzas 'pizza pies' in the 70s but that's a whole other story, isn't it dad??? ;-)
